Scholarship Fund Honoring September 11 Victim Established at Berks County Community Foundation

Reading (December 17, 2002) – When Robert F. Mace graduated from Boyertown Area High School in 1976, he received scholarships to study journalism and pre-law at the University of Maryland. From there, he went on to earn a law degree from George Washington University.

Today, Mace’s family is recognizing the value of that educational opportunity by creating a scholarship in Robert’s name to benefit Boyertown Area High School seniors.

Mace died on September 11, 2001 at his office as assistant general counsel for Cantor Fitzgerald at the World Trade Center. His family donated $20,000 from his estate to establish the scholarship fund through Berks County Community Foundation.

The Robert F. Mace Scholarship Fund benefits Boyertown Area High School students who are in the top 15 percent of their graduating class and will attend a two- or four-year college or university.

To earn the scholarship, students must show strong commitment to academics and unwavering dedication to extracurricular school or community activities. The students should demonstrate a strong desire for personal growth, the ability to overcome challenges and be inspirational to others. Preference will be given to students with financial need who intend to major in journalism or pre-law.

The fund will award a scholarship once per year beginning in spring 2003. Applications are available at the Boyertown Area High School guidance office. Deadline for applications is April 12, 2003.
