Berks County Community Foundation's Headquarters
and Community Conference Center

A Good Location

For two years, the Community Foundation attempted to find an existing structure in downtown Reading to convert into its headquarters. After rejecting more than thirty buildings, the board changed its approach and began to look for a site in the city that could be used to construct a building that not only housed the Community Foundation but also provided much-needed meeting space for nonprofit groups and community foundation initiatives.

That search led us to the corner of Third and Court streets. Today, the corner is a surface parking lot that was created after the demolition of nine homes and businesses that lined the corner until the 1970s. The Community Foundation purchased the lot in October 2006.

The site is in a prime location: The Bieber Bus terminal, a city fire station and the Chiarelli Plaza parking garage fill out the other corners of the intersection. The site shares the block with Zion Baptist Church, and is one block away from Reading Area Community College, the GoggleWorks Center for the Arts and Penn Street’s restaurants.  The Community Foundation has partnered with the Zion Baptist Church to design a revitalization of the entire block that complements and supports the surrounding neighborhood.
